Every procurement professional reaches a stage where operational skills alone are not enough. To rise into senior or strategic roles, you need to think like a leader - managing teams, shaping supply strategies, and creating competitive advantage. The CIPS Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Procurement and Supply bridges this critical career gap, providing the knowledge and confidence to take on greater responsibility and lead with impact. The Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS) Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Procurement & Supply is designed to equip professionals exactly for these responsibilities.
Why Level 5?
CIPS Level 5 sits at the “managerial and professional” levels of the CIPS Global Standard.
It is often taken by those who have:

Exam Types and Assessment
To earn the qualification, you must pass the exams for all the modules you choose (5 core + 3 elective). The exam formats differ depending on module size and content.
Here’s how assessments generally work:
Constructed Response (CR) exams - these are essay / longer written form exams. They are typically for the 12-credit modules (L5M1 and L5M4).
Objective Response (OR) exams - multiple-choice or shorter objective question types. Usually applied to the 6-credit modules (core & electives) and also to some core ones.
Pass Marks/Grading:
For Constructed Response modules (12-credit), the pass mark is typically 50%. Distinctions or merits are awarded at higher brackets (for example, distinction might be 75-100%).
For Objective Response modules (6-credit), the pass mark tends to be higher (often 70%) since they are shorter, more factual or scenario-based format.
What You Gain: Skills, Competence, and Leadership
By completing Level 5, professionals will have developed:
Leadership & People Management Skills - from learning how to develop, motivate, and manage individuals and teams. L5M1 is dedicated to this.
Risk Management in Supply Chains & Contracts - ability to identify, assess, and manage risks, plus legal/contractual risk.
Ethical & Sustainable Procurement Practice - understanding how ethical, sustainability, and governance issues affect supply chains.
Financial & Contract Strategic Ability - understanding contracts, supplier relationships, cost/financial dimensions.
Strategic Electives - such as category management, operations, negotiation, change management, which enable more specialized leadership strengths.
All of these help the professional move from doing things “right” to figuring out which things to do, how, and when, and influencing others across the organization.
Pathway & Progression
●After Level 5, you can proceed to CIPS Level 6 Professional Diploma, which is the level required for MCIPS (Member of CIPS) Chartered Status.
●Level 5 helps with employability, credibility, and earning potential. It is globally recognised.
Challenges & Tips for Success
●Because some modules are heavy in theory and require good writing/analysis (esp. the essay type exams), preparing well in advance is important.
●Time management: balancing module learning, revision, and real-work responsibilities.
●Use exam dumps, past papers, tutor support, study groups.
●Selecting electives that align with both your current role and desired future direction.
The CIPS Level 5 Advanced Diploma is more than a qualification - it's a leadership transformation. It arms procurement professionals with the strategic mindset, technical competence, ethical grounding, and confidence needed to move up from execution to leadership. For individuals who complete this level, the exams are rigorous, but the rewards - in terms of career growth, impact and recognition - are substantial.
